Amorgos

Amorgos is the most eastern island in the Cyclades group of islands. Unlike our neighbouring Islands, Amorgos is not exploding with tourists and is still full of untouched nature. The dramatic scenery of steep mountain cliffs, kissing the deep blue ocean, will take your breath away.

Chora

Chora, the main town of Amorgos is a must see. It's filled with narrow streets, cute shops, cozy cafes and amazing restaurants. You can spend hours wandering around and soaking up the cycladic atmosphere. Chora is located about 5 km northeast of Katapola. It's a short drive or bus ride away, typically taking around 10-15 minutes to reach by car. Chora's charm lies not only in its picturesque streets but also in its breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea.

Windmills of Chora

The windmills in Chora, Amorgos, are old cylinder-shaped buildings that used to help grind grain using the power of the wind. Even though they don't work anymore, they're still standing tall and look stunning against the blue sky. People love to visit them because they're a reminder of how things used to be on the island. Some great photos can be taken here with the town in the background. They're worth checking out when you're in Chora.

Agia Anna Beach

Agia Anna Beach is a beautiful spot on Amorgos island, famous for its appearance in the movie "The Big Blue." Nearby, there's a charming little white church, adding to the beach's charm. It's a great place to relax, swim, and enjoy the scenery, especially for fans of the film who want to experience its magic firsthand. Agia Anna Beach is located approximately 3 km southwest of Katapola. It's easily accessible by car, taxi, or even by foot for those who enjoy a scenic stroll along the coastline.

Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa

One famous spot is the Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa. It's built high up on a cliff, and dates back to the 11th century. This monastery is not only a religious site but also known for its remarkable architecture. The Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa is accessed by a long staircase carved into the cliffside, consisting of around 300 steps. If you can master these and reach the top, the views are breathtaking. The friendly monks will welcome you with a shot of local psimeni, and some of the best loukoumia you have ever had. The Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa is located on the southeastern coast of Amorgos, about 7 kilometers southeast of Katapola. It typically takes around 15-20 minutes to reach by car or taxi, following the scenic coastal road.

Ancient Minoa

For people interested in history, there's the Ancient Minoa. It's an old city near Katapola, Amorgos that you can still visit today. This ancient city dates back to the Bronze Age and was an important settlement during the Minoan period, which is where it gets its name. Visitors to Ancient Minoa can explore the ruins of ancient buildings, including houses, temples, and fortifications. The site provides a fascinating insight into the daily life, culture, and architecture of the people who lived there thousands of years ago. Ancient Minoa is located approximately 4 kilometres southeast of Katapola. It's a relatively short distance and can be reached by car, taxi, or bus in around 10-15 minutes, depending on traffic and road conditions.

Botanical Garden in Katapola

The most unique spot in town is the hidden botanical garden nestled within the streets of Katapola. It's a real treasure created by two young individuals who transformed an abandoned space amidst the houses into a botanical haven. Here, they cultivate and preserve the native flora of the Cyclades islands, crafting local spices from them, which are later sold in a shop nearby. Everything is entirely organic, adding to its charm. Within the garden, there's a lovely dining area where visitors can relax amongst the plants and flowers, either on chairs or cushions. Occasionally, the garden hosts cultural events, live performances, and outdoor movies, making it a summer delight for all. The garden is located 300 metres from the port of Katapola.
